Understanding The Clean Air Act and Domestic Fuel Standards

To tackle rising air quality concerns, the UK government has introduced legislation controlling emissions from domestic fires. The Clean Air Act, introduced in 1956, set the groundwork for by restricting which fuels can be burned in urban and densely populated areas. Building on this, the Air Quality (Domestic Solid Fuels Standards) Regulations 2020 set strict limits on moisture content and emissions controls for domestic wood fuels.

Many parts of the UK are officially designated Smoke Control Areas (or smokeless zones) – where only authorised fuels may be burnt, unless used in a DEFRA-exempt appliance.

If you are unsure whether you live in one of these zones, check your local council’s website for your postcode’s smoke control status.

Burning Wood in Smoke Control Areas

  • The firewood is Ready to Burn certified and compliant with the 2020 Air Quality Regulations, or
  • It is burned in a DEFRA-exempt stove or appliance, certified to minimise smoke emissions.

If your stove or boiler isn’t exempt, you must only use authorised fuels. Using non-exempt appliances or burning unapproved fuels, like wet wood, risk penalties or fines.

Since January 2022, all new solid fuel stoves sold in the UK must meet Ecodesign standards – meaning they are built to stricter efficiency and emissions requirements. These modern stoves burn cleaner, are more energy efficient, and help improve local air quality.

Key Firewood Regulations

The Air Quality (Domestic Solid Fuels Standards) Regulations 2020 are part of the UK’s Clean Air Strategy and outline fuels can legally be used:

  • Firewood sold in small quantities (under 2 cubic meters) must be Ready to Burn certified, guaranteeing a maximum moisture content of 20%.
  • Larger columes (2m³ or more) do not require certification but must come with clear guidance on proper drying and storage.
  • Larger columes (2m³ or more) do not require certification but must come with clear guidance on proper drying and storage.
  • Manufactured fuels such as briquettes must meet strict limits on sulphur content (≤ 2%) and smoke emissions (≤ 5g/hour). The sale of traditional house coal (bituminous coal) for domestic use is banned.

What does Ready to Burn Certification Mean?

The Ready to Burn scheme, endorsed by the UK government and managed by Woodsure, guarantees that firewood has been dried to under 20% moisture content, for efficient, low smoke burning. Ready to Burn logs ignite quickly, produce more heat, and create less soot or tar — protecting both your stove and the environment.

All Ecoblaze kiln dried logs are Ready to Burn certified and sourced from sustainably managed forests. When you buy from us, you’re choosing a cleaner, greener, and fully compliant way to enjoy your fire.

How to Burn Firewood Responsibly at Home

  • Always use Ready to Burn certified firewood
  • Avoid burning wet or unseasoned wood to prevent excessive smoke and harmful creosote build-up.
  • Never burn treated or painted wood as this produces toxic fumes and damages appliances.

  • Ensure your appliance is DEFRA-exempt or meets Ecodesign standards.
  • Follow manufacturer guidelines to maintain airflow and burn at recommended temperatures. Avoid overloading your stove to reduce smoke.
  • Have your chimney swept at least once a year to maintain efficiency prevent soot build-up.
  • Store logs off the ground in a dry, ventilated area to preserve low moisture content. Click here for more Firewood Storage Tips.
  • Check local fuel regulations with your council to confirm compliance.
