Top 5 Wood Burning Myths
Busted by Ecoblaze
How much do you really know about burning wood fuels? There’s a lot of misinformation out there, and some common myths can lead to poor burning habits or unfair reputations for wood burners.
At Ecoblaze, we believe in burning better. Let’s set the record straight on the top 5 wood burning myths and help you enjoy a warmer, cleaner fire with complete peace of mind.

Myth 1: Firewood Produces Too Much Smoke
This is only true if your burn wet or green logs, which emits thick smoke and soot. Properly seasoned or kiln dried firewood burns cleanly, efficiently, and produces very little smoke.
Since 2021, UK regulations have banned the sale of wet wood in small volumes to reduce domestic air pollution. Wood sold in volumes under 2m3 must be Ready to Burn Certified – meaning it contains less than 20% moisture.Ecoblaze firewood is expertly kiln dried and certified Ready to Burn, guaranteeing a clean, efficient burn with minimal smoke and ash.
How you store your firewood matters too. Keep logs off the ground in a dry, well-ventilated area to prevent moisture build-up and maintain their quality. Click here for more firewood storage advice.
Ecoblaze Tip: Starting your fire with Ecoblaze Natural Firelighters and Kiln Dried Kindling helps prevent smouldering smoke and gives you a powerful, clean flame right from the start. Avoid overloading your stove – a small, well-aerated fire burns cleaner and hotter.
Myth 2: Wood Burners are Inefficient and Major Polluters
This is a common misconception that has been doing the rounds since a DEFRA report in 2019 suggested that wood burning causes 38% of UK particulate emissions (PM2.5). Updated data puts the real figure closer to 17%, which includes all domestic burning – from stoves to open fires and bonfires.

Modern stoves are also far cleaner thanks to Ecodesign regulations introduced in 2022. These require that new appliances meet strict efficiency and emissions standards, reducing particulate emissions by up to 90% compared to open fires.
Look for the Clear Skies certification mark when buying a new stove — it shows the appliance meets or exceeds Ecodesign and DEFRA standards for cleaner burning.

Myth 3: Burning Wood Isn’t Sustainable
Unlike fossil fuels, wood is a renewable and sustainable energy source – especially it is harvested responsibly. Sustainable forestry ensures that felled trees are replaced, maintaining healthy forests and a balanced carbon cycle.
Trees absorb carbon dioxide (CO2) as they grow. This offsets the CO2 released back into the atmosphere when burned, making responsibly sourced firewood close to carbon neutral.

Myth 4: All Firewood Burns the Same
Definitely not. The difference comes down to moisture content, which has a big impact on burning performance.
- Green wood contains a lot of moisture – it smokes, smoulders and wastes energy.
- Seasoned logs are air-dried over months. While they burn cleaner than wet wood, they often retain moisture levels of 25% or more.
- Kiln dried logs are dried in carefully controlled conditions to achieve the ideal 10 – 20% moisture content, for an easy light, hot burn and maximum heat output.
The result? Less smoke, less soot, and more heat per log.

Myth 5: There’s no need for a Chimney Sweep
Think again. Chimney maintenance is vital for safe and efficient burning. Creosote build-up, soot, and blockages restrict airflow, reduce heat output, and increase the risk of chimney fires.
Annual chimney sweeps are essential – even for occasional users – to keep your home safe and your stove running efficiently. A professional sweep will remove residue and spot any structural issues early – saving you costly repairs down the line and ensuring safe operation.

Don’t forget to clean out your stove and ash pan regularly to maintain airflow and performance.
